Great list. These are important to know,because you never know when a crisis may happen. A couple years ago,I found my father deceased in an Arizona motel room and had to deal with police and coroners, as well as make arrangements for him. I was most worried about taking his ashes home on the plane. TSA was very respectful with the ashes as they tested the exterior of the plastic container.
My daughter and I discussed it, and we both agree that cremation is the best alternative for me. AND, part of my ashes will be mixed with paint to paint a garden dragon (something my grandson picked out, because he knows I love dragons), part will be sent to a glass-blower in KC who will make 3 art pieces (one for each of my children), and the rest will be placed in a planter, with a Japanese Maple planted on top of it (because it's my favorite tree).
My Mom died back in 2005 and she pre-planned her funeral to be buried in GA with her parents and siblings. GA requires embalming, vaults and per mile for transport to the cemetery that was many miles away. $$$$$$$ It was so expensive.
My Dad was a veteran and he also pre-planned. He only had to pay a funeral home to process/cremation for $1500 but the burial in a VA cemetery was free. We learned our lesson with the cost of my Mother's funeral. I'm getting cremated too before I have to get transported to GA with the rest of the family!
MostUniversities with a decent med school have a pretty cool thing that I'm personally doing when I'm done with this world..the school takes the body, does medical stuff with it, then sends it back to the family and pays for whatever you and your peeps have planned.. whether you're going the entire funeral route (yes headstone is included), or cremation.. but you have to contact said university before you expire😊
I had my brother cremated when he passed in 2022. It was a direct cremation. The funeral director was somebody I have known for years. He walked me through what I needed to do. He is also the one who took care of helping me plan my dad's service and all when he passed in 2011. Very good at making sure things were like I wanted in both cases and to keep costs down as much as possible.
when both my mother and father were cremated the only thing we had to pay for was the wooden "slab" and a sheet that was used to cover them before placed into the cremator unit
My family knew our funeral director who was a member of our church. Also my best friend took care of headstones. We all discussed what plans we wanted so when both my parents passed at different times their funerals were already planned. My mum had my dad cremated and my friend made the headstone exactly what was wanted especially because he was a veteran. When my mum passed I was in charge of everything. So she was cremated in a cardboard box and then I picked out a beautiful biodegradable piece that she was buried in. My family never feared death ❣️
Years ago, I set up medical donation with cremation for my mom, husband and myself. When my mom died at home in 2017 (I found her and that was the absolute worst part of this experience), I called 911 (the kind officers stayed with me until she was transported), then the company who I contracted with who then contacted the local mortuary service (they arrived within 3 hours). Mom was then flown to the company's Florida facility. After roughly 4 weeks, her cremains were returned to me with a lovely card thanking me. There was absolutely no cost.
