this is what happens when china decides to take over the country, first they encourage a coup to kick out the French, replace with russians and now beijing backs the jihadists to overthrow the junta and breakup the country into ungovernable warlord strongholds where anything goes. this is the sahel blood corridor plan of china.

Oh West Africa 🌍 why God help us

Imagine kicking out a competent French military from your country when you have these bums to defend you…
@
That didn't happen when the French were still there. Side with Russia and lose.

The Tuareg uprising and creation of Azawad should have been recognized back in 2012.

Only then would it be easier to defeat the Islamists.

FLA is only working for Azawad independence.

That happens if you alli with russia, you dont get any help
@
Rich Arabic countries are funding them.
@
Well, they kicked out France and invited Russia...what else would you expect?
@
Where did you get your numbers from?
@
Good. The military junta in Mali did not want assistance from French troops. So France granted them their wish and left.
@
Pure incompetence. How do you have a convoy of 1000's of soldiers ambushed in flat terrain. That means there was no proper planning, intelligence, or reconnaissance.
@
I'm sure they will blame France somehow

Russian mercenaries were hired by Mali to stop this sort of thing. I guess they were ineffective.

I agree, harbourview. It feels like every time there is a glimmer of stability, another escalation like this sets everything back.

I hear you, GreenThumb. It’s hard to imagine any real progress when things feel this volatile on the ground.

It really is a heavy way to start the day, Owen P. I often wonder if diplomacy can even take root when the ground feels this unstable.

I'm with you there, June. It's definitely a sobering topic for a morning watch—do you think a diplomatic solution is still realistic?

I think it's a bit of both, Theo. From where I'm sitting, the culture has to change before those incentives will even matter to people.
