Why did Romania Give Bessarabia FOR FREE to the Soviet Union?

I haven't watched the video yet but basically because the West had fallen, France fell, UK was far away and never gave us support anyways just morally and some pieces of paper. Carol II went to France and UK in 1938 to visit them after they sold out Czechoslovakia and just got empty promises not armament sale, nothing. He thought Turkey would replace Czechoslovakia in the Entente but Turkey stayed neutral.He tried to win Hitler by selling him oil and tried to delay the inevitable for as long as possible. I don't condemn him like many neo-legionaries or so called "patriotic communists" do in my country, I think all 4 Kings of Romania were good in their own way. We weren't Finland, Romania could have been attacked in the South by Bulgaria, North by Hungary and North-West by Slovakia and Germany, that would have been basically Yugoslavia 1941. We always manouvered things as to survive the best, we weren't suicidal like Yugoslavia or Greece.
Edit: You forgot to mention the Tatarbunar uprising of 1924 and how they wanted to dismantle Romania into 5 occupation zones each occupied by a "troika" this was during the late Lenin era however.

This is very personal for me I'm a descendent of Bessarabian Germans and my great grandparents and grandmother had to leave Bessarabia and head to Germany after that event. I do think that Moldova does have the right of return to Romania if they want to.

2:17 Russia attacked the Ottoman Empire because the Bulgarians rebelled, not the Romanians. Romania was de facto independent. Russia asked Romania for passage, which Romania gave. Then Russia got stuck in the war and asked Romania for help (the famous telegram with "please send troops"), which Romania did, helping Russia win the war. Then Russian troops did not want to leave Romania and would have annexed it too if the Western Powers would not have stopped them. They even wanted to capture their former ally in the 1877 war, (then) Prince Carol. Russians always were treacherous.

If Romania did not give up its lands to the USSR, Germany would have invaded from the West and Romania would have been partitioned just like Poland. Maybe we should have fought then, but we would not have won. But we did fight! Because that is why we went with Germany in 1941 and fought on the Eastern front. And then we had to fight on the Western front too, for the Allies. But we protected the bulk of our population. Sadly, at the expanse of our Bassarabian and Bucovinan population😢.

Carol II wasn't wrong in what he did, but he's to blame for letting the situation get so out of hand. He had been a complacent ruler most of his reign and did little to modernize the military or prepare for such events like the many territorial demands from neighboring nation. He should have either abdicated sooner or taken his job seriously.

Thank you for this informative video. As a Finn I can see the parallel between Finland and Romania in WW2. Both nations were victims of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and therefore first attacked by the USSR and later allied with Germany. They would have loved peace and neutrality during 1939-1945.

My family elder was the governor of MOST of the Basarabian territory EXACTLY when the 1940 events happened.
His name was Grigore Cazacliu - lawyer, interwar politician.

Here are some passages from his memoir in regard to the ultimatum note:

“Everyone was asking me in horror whether the news was true or not. Since I had received no word from the government, I categorically denied this information, which had caused widespread panic, and calm was largely restored.”

“I told the Minister of the Interior that if he asks me to be shot—I will do so; but I, Grigore Cazacliu, who have fought all my life, along with all my relatives, against the Russians, and especially against the communists—I cannot be the one to surrender Bessarabia and have be pointed at and told that their father surrendered Bessarabia. The Minister of Interior understood my plight [...] I crossed the Prut River with the firm conviction that soon I would return to the lands of my ancestors.”

He left his home and office behind, not before burning all the papers he could, that could be of use to the Soviet regime.
