Even a single cubic light year has a volume of about 10^48 cubic meters, so the claim at 37:15 about 10^26 cubic meters for the the volume of observable universe was a "slight" mistake here.
I like the thought that the big bang just wasnt that big....it was a local event in this universe, and part of a cycle we do not yet understand fully....
When I was in 6th grade my school created exploratory classes and we got to pick which one we signed up for. I excitedly picked astronomy. The problem was, it was being taught by one of the math teachers who was very awkward and volatile, and was known to explode into tantrums on a dime. (It was a different world in the 80s.)
I remember him drawing an illustration on the blackboard and telling us that it was believed that the universe was expanding. I had never heard this before!
I raised my hand and asked, "If the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into?"
I will never forget the pause and blank look on his face. Then he got agitated and told me he was "trying to teach."
I like to imagine he was up late that night.
The theory I accept the most is our finite universe is a blink of an eye in the infiniteness that is everything. Our universe (spacetime) started expansion at the moment of the big bang and will continue to expand until the atomic bonds themselves give way to entropy, matter returns to energy, and our universe ceases to exist as we know it in the big freeze, returning back to the lowest possible energy state where it's just a quantum foam waiting for energy to nucleate and start the next big bang.
I remember asking my middle school science teacher: what if the universe is bigger and older than we think? he looked at me and calmly said thats not how it works… 😏
Even black holes die out. Just keep that in mind. What I learned is...because we see nothing at the end of the universe, when it collapses, (for whatever reason), it is collapsing the entire block of time, (and eveything in it), for the next big bang.
Another theory is that our Big Bang was merely a local event in an infinitely large 'multiverse,' where new universes are constantly bubbling up like foam in a bathtu
