Banning them for children is like banning murder only if the target is a child.. the addictive and negative algorithms should be targetted, not the age of the user
As someone who was bullied quite severely as a child I do not say this lightly, I probably wouldn't be here today without YouTube. School to me felt like a prison. Literally the only respite I had in my life was the internet, it was the only place I felt like I could exist without pressure. I agree that there is a social media problem today but I think that mainly comes down to the format of modern content than anything. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok literally designed their systems to feel like gambling, with the repetitive motion of scrolling and the reward being interesting content. That's where the real mental health issues lie, a blanket ban is foolish and as we have seen, ineffective. Honestly thanks you guys for standing up to this.
YouTube 100% should not be included with the other social media, I'd barely even qualify as social media. Having had rough times as a young teenager when I was feeling down, getting home from school and watching Smosh, PewDiePie or jacksepticeye really really made my day mentally.
I love expanding government power when my allies are in charge because my enemies will definitely never get back into power and use the precedent against me.
We've seen that this doesn't work already. Australia's ban largely failed because kids found work arounds on their own or their parents did it for them. This doesn't even consider the fact that banning something usually pushes the people that use it into shadier, unregulated alternatives. The very legislation intended to "protect kids" may very well push them into the arms of predators.
