"Can Burnham fix Britain?"

"No."

That's TL:DR news. Now for the weather.

I live in Manchester and its defiantly working hear. things aren't perfect but its getting better.

Some great stuff here. Devolution for cities and specific areas is long overdue, Cornwall is an obvious non city area needing devo. Public transport infrastructure is an easy win to improve the economy and environment, Bristol comes to mind here as long overdue for a metro. Personally, I'd like to see science parks in every part of Britain, linked to local firms and local industries. Some genuine local democracy would be nice too, with more control over services delivered locally but managed in London.

golly, Thatcher extractivism didn’t lead to regional-econ health in the longer term, you say?

Not enough housing, Bad wages/unemployment, crime, aging population. The issues in the UK remains unchanged for 30+ years.
@
Btw, Andy burnham defended Darren Whittaker’s 800m luxury development of flats with taxpayer subsidies, then Darren left the uk to Monaco to pay no tax, and paid nothing to affordable housing which he previously promised to do. This guy is kier Starmer V2, semi “for the working people” when campaigning then subsequently forgets them.

He seems to be somewhat of a fusion between Old and New Labour. New Labour focus on devolution, re-assuring markets, pro-EU, constitutional reform. Old Labour focus on industrialisation, redistribution, greater public control/some ownership, economic & class centred rather than social progressiveness.

"Business Friendly Socialism" and its just social democracy

Increasing spending in infrastructure is amazing, but to make it sustainable costs need to be lowered, so I hope Burnham’s government actively explores ways themselves to lower costs without impacting the usefulness of projects, maybe by cutting red tape and adopting mainland European practices.

For example, Paris is building 200km of new metro lines for only 5-6x times the cost of London’s Bakerloo Line extension which is 7.5km long. Imagine what the UK could do if we could build infrastructure at those prices.
@
pleeeeeese give more devolution!!

regional transport should be under the control of regions and not an uncaring national government.

“Manchesterism” is a term I’d never thought I’d ever hear 😂 do other cities have this? I want to see what “Lutonism” looks like 😂

@

0:19 "Business Friendly Socialism", Europeans re-inventing Dengism from first principle

'he'll have to convince the electorate, and more crucially, the bond markets' is such a telling phrase
