The European Union is weighing a region-wide social media ban for children under 16. The proposal comes amid growing concerns about the impact of social media on young people. Supporters argue that st
How about banning ads on tv’s as soon as soon as you turn them on like the fact my tv has ads before I even click on an app legit makes me want to lose my mind
The government is losing control not gaining it. People will just circumvent it and mask their identities, so the government will have no idea what's going on.
This has nothing to do with protecting children. It's about expanding surveillance and chipping away at everyone's privacy. The people cheering for this seem far more interested in controlling everyone else than solving the actual problem. The entire verification system is laughably flawed. Parents who don't want to supervise their children simply hand them a tablet or smartphone. Those kids can bypass the whole system in seconds by using their parents' accounts. Congratulations you've inconvenienced millions of adults while accomplishing almost nothing. Meanwhile, a few malignant politicians exploit the support of a gullible majority of parents to force this law through, all while pretending it's about protecting children.
Are y'all full on serious about this? If it failed in Australia, it is GUARANTEED to fail elsewhere. There's no doubt in that. Kids will just use a VPN to bypass it.
Governments trying to do parenting is the dumbest thing I've heard. Mandating age verification on the service side does more harm to information security and more targeted exploration of everyone including minors is just so backwards. They should strive for more tooling for the parents to manage and protect their own children let the decision be made on the user side.
When are they going to realize that the things theyre trying to keep away from children, at the cost of their mental and social health, will still impact the adults who use it, not to mention that your accounts will have to be tied to your government ID.
They need to actually regulate these companies rather than creating an oppressive atmosphere without any tangible benefit for anyone involved. Like you've just to use a VPN, maybe change your device's locale or download the apk from a foreign source. Who wouldn't do those things?
Load of bs, the lot of it. Im sick of hearing about this and having to pretend its normal.
Like the drug war this is going to have zero real success. Instead it's going to create incentives to resist government and rules of government. They will also create, and I think with good reason, conspiracies about the government and their overreach. Instead of teaching kids how to actually deal with online life, and give them better tools in behavior on how to deal with online life, we decide to instead try to ban it. You might as well just try and ban sex. I'm sure teenagers will follow those rules too...
They banned Youtube for kids in Australia, but it's only to make a login. Kids can still watch Youtube videos without a login, so they weren't banned at all.
I do not think most adults support the requirement that they have to upload their ID

Under 13? You’ll need a parent’s OK first — it takes them one click.
