Brian Greene and physicist Samir Mathur explore one of the deepest puzzles in modern physics, the true nature of black holes and the fate of information in the universe.
This is one of the best conversations on this channel, very down to earth, talking conceptually, building on ideas, and no animosities between say string theory and other theories, but just discussing what theories work best where. Samir Mathur takes us through the conceptual journey which is relatable and that tells he has a mastery over the subject. No pontification, no name dropping, no fancy associations or no celebrity like behavior that is often seen on this channel. Refreshing to hear Samir Mathur who acts and talks like a working physicist who is publishing and active in his field. Very clear thoughts without biases as it should be.
Thank you, this was an excellent discussion. The /very/ loose analogy that is coming to mind is that, like how a white dwarf is held up by electron degeneracy pressure, and how a neutron star is held up by neutron degeneracy pressure, a fuzzball is held up by "string degeneracy pressure" at mere Planck lengths above its Schwarzschild radius, preventing the formation of an event horizon. In other words, strings don't let gravity make event horizons. So when additional mass falls onto the fuzzball, since the Schwarzschild radius for the original fuzzball plus that new mass is larger, the fuzzball is forced to become less dense to prevent the formation of an event horizon.
I would love to know how much slower time is passing for the interior of the fuzzball from a external perspective. My intuition is saying that, while an external perspective has to wait something like 10^67 years for the stellar-core-turned-fuzzball to whisper away all of its mass as radiation, from the perspective of the stellar core, one moment it was inside a star, the next moment the entirety of its mass has been converted to energy in what it would say is an explosion that makes supernova look tame.
I really appreicate how Brian Greene systematically place the theories of his guests within the framework of mainstream science, here the mainstream wormhole/nonlocal vs Samir Mathur's fuzzball argument. Only a handful of popularizers do that and it creates a very confusing impression of science being of matters of sports teams supporters where anything goes. I think Samir should write a popular book on all this "Information Paradox" to dethrone the Susskind version of what happened (it would be good for Susskind as well to update his book to take into account the AMPS, Fuzzball, and ER=EPR versions
