This is why I love theoretical physics. Even without definitive experimental answers yet, the ideas and reasoning push the boundaries of human knowledge.

On the "getting lucky" with observations: it appears it is already happening. I read an article on M31-2014-DS1 on a vanishing star that turned into a blackhole (in about 2h) without "fireworks". Now protocols are developed to catch similar events "in real time".
Personally, as a side hobby, I try and identify what "(known) matter" would satisfy the condition to have the required mass fit within the volume defined by the escape velocity c (aka event horizon). I do this for the very small 3 solar masses blackholes.
Interestingly enough, for this sort of small blackholes at least, it becomes obvious that something must happen with infalling matter and rather fast in order to fit in certain scenarios.

Thank you soooo much for this video. I have been checking the WSF site everyday for new content, I am very happy that is not only once a year any more, like the old WSF events. It is hard to make these programs and we beg you to continue the great job and give us more of this. R.Bousso is my favorite physicist, he is fantastic.
