Really, you do have to give credit to President Trump. I know he can seem off the rails at times, but he has genuinely tried to make peace with the radicals in Iran—people who keep manipulating the situation and playing mind games with the world. That would be challenging for anyone. Iran’s behaviour often feels more chaotic than the Wild West. Trump is right: trying to get common sense out of leaders acting irrationally is nearly impossible. One day things seem stable, the next they’re completely unpredictable. No one can manage that forever, and unfortunately the world is going to feel the consequences.
This is why we should have stood with America. We should have been bigger than worrying about a few poorly chosen words and stepped up when it mattered. It isn’t fair that the American people carry so much of the burden in protecting global peace. We’ve let our allies down badly—but it’s not too late to make amends.
At this point, I’m afraid there’s only one answer: finish the job. Warn any Iranian civilians who want to leave, if that’s possible, and then ensure that countries who value peace step up and help put an end to extremist violence once and for all.
