The essay misses touching on the very real issue post-surgery lack of support. Nature has a piece published on the subject titled "Abandoned", which is quite apt.

Companies in that industry have gone under and have left patients, with implants, without viable support after the device has been implanted. It's a serious topic and should have been included in the essay.
