I met Rick some time ago. Shook his hand, looked into his eyes, and felt like he wasn’t looking at me but into me. A very calm but strong presence. So unusual it actually felt unsettling. Only met one other person like that. Rick is tuned into something. A clarity and peace above the noise. It’s inspiring.
What made this conversation so fascinating was the tension between two completely different operating systems. Stephen kept trying to understand creativity through the language of metrics, outcomes, strategy and predictability—while Rick kept gently rejecting the premise. “I wouldn’t describe it like that.” “We don’t work that way.”
And that’s precisely the point. Creativity often doesn’t offer the certainty Stephen was looking for. You make the work because it needs to be made, not because the result can be guaranteed or reverse-engineered from a ten-year business plan.
Even the exchange about TM captured it perfectly. Rick seemed genuinely curious about why Stephen hadn’t experienced meditation himself despite living with someone immersed in that world. There are some things you can’t fully understand by analyzing them from the outside. You have to enter the experience.
The tension wasn’t a flaw in the conversation—it may have been the most revealing part of it.
I was signed to Rick’s American Recordings back in the mid 90s. He not only gave me the freedom to create and be as creative as possible but he also gave me the freedom to move forward without any ties once we ran our course at the label and wanted a release. One of the truly great ones in the music industry.
