I just realised that i kind of used this effect at work every day back when i was a port worker. Every morning i had to pull the mooring lines straight and as i pulled them out of the water i would loop the rope. Once the mooring line was straight i would grab one end and give it a whip twoards the water and watch it pull itself up and then down into the water. I could have just dropped the whole bunch of rope into the water but i would always do it this way because it made it less likely for the rope to tangle and it was cool to watch.
