The first official military recognition of the United States occurred on November 16, 1776 . The Dutch Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius (a Dutch colony) became the first foreign power to acknowledge the new American nation when its Fort Oranje returned an 11-gun salute to the Continental Navy brig Andrew Doria. 🇳🇱🇺🇸
What stayed with me most is that this video doesn’t reduce the Revolution to famous generals, glorious speeches, or a few decisive battles. It shows how independence was carried on the backs of ordinary people—soldiers freezing without shoes, women keeping families and farms alive, enslaved men risking death for a freedom the new nation was not yet willing to give everyone.
Prince Griswold’s story especially exposes the deepest contradiction of the Revolution: men were declaring that “all men are created equal” while many of them still owned other human beings. That doesn’t make the ideals meaningless, but it reminds us that declaring freedom is much easier than actually extending it to everyone.
Maybe that is the real legacy of the Revolution—not a finished victory in 1783, but a promise that later generations would keep forcing the country to confront. Truly thoughtful and powerful documentary.
I'm not American. The Founding Fathers' struggle to maintain the dignity as human beings who want to be free amazes me. Patriotic, fighting spirit, brave to die to defend the country.
