If the PM didn't have the authority to sack Ollie Robbins, he would be doing his job right now. The fact that he was sacked tells me the PM does have that power.
No10 North does feel like a gimmick when the reality is devolution should be done across England, outside London there could be a number of regional bodies covering 7-10mil people which can focus on health, housing, education and local services. For most people that would put decision making within 75 miles of them which would certainly feel like local decision making.
Westminster would then focus on foreign policy, defence, trade and home office functions like national security and policing, the big split would be how the Treasury moves tax powers so it has a base for funding yet can allow for local taxation probably closer to a federal model.
Perhaps Sir Simon Case is not an impartial witness, having effectively been removed by Starmer himself.
The way Starmer sacked Robbins was unnecessarily brutal but surely it was right in fact. Robbins dumped on Starmer by NOT telling him there was an unknown and massive political risk in that Mandelson had failed vetting. Robbins' decision to say nothing was a huge mistake.
In the field of law, those that have praised him greatly in law, say Starmer was utterly abysmal with the jury. So the warning signs were there. Starmer doesn't do people, therefore WILL be absolutely pathetic as Prime Minister. And he was just that!!
Whether Olly Robbins was competent at his job (it's clear he made a massive error in not telling Starmer that Mandelson had failed vetting) or whether there was a fair process to determine whether he should have been sacked (the decision doesn't look fair if he had the authority to appoint Mandelson without telling Starmer) are two distinct questions.
When you contact government it is almost impossible to know who is responsible for anything, do we really another tranche of random public bodies? Take Health for example. Who is responsible if I receive bad service? My GP? The hospital? The local NHS trust? The NHS? The regional health body? The Department of Health? The private company that delivered my treatment? All of these layers BTW are taking our tax money. We dont need more opaque organisations we need fewer!
