I wrote an essay on, this municipality fragmentation harms the coordination of several major US cities not just LA. Miami,Atlanta, Detroit and Baltimore are just a few examples of how much urban economies have outpaced the growth of municipal political boundaries .
so they decentralized municipal power, but the parties themselves are a duopoly anyway. not surprising that it's not conducive to progress on the long-term.
the political class isn’t just afraid of demsocs like Mamdani gaining power because they will increase taxes and advocate for the public’s rights. they’re also afraid because they had the american people pinned into a state of complacency in dissatisfaction. politicians have been making excuses for why they can’t govern effectively for years, and people have just accepted that government “doesn’t work”. but mamdani came into office and immediately started proving that, yes, government does work, and it can get things done well, so long as you elect people who care.
Maybe Los Angeles County should be merged into the City and County of Los Angeles, with a system of boroughs and one powerful mayor, like NYC or Greater London
Mamdani is proof that "if politicians wanted to help, they could", so all I'm hearing is excuses and more excuses and a political ruling class worried the people are demanding them to do...their job (SHOCKING)!

If you become an elected official and you don't have the power you have to become an advocate and galvanize the movement you created to mobilize against those who actually hold the power.
In other words, if housing is a problem and you don't have the means to tackle it on your own you put pressure on those who do by organizing marches and protests and hearings.
