I don't understand the surprise of the English that someone is claiming such a distant territory when their neighbors in Ireland and Scotland are making the same claim.
As an American, I crossed the border from Brazil to Argentina and right away, monuments of the Falklands were seen. So it seems like its a big deal for them there.
The war is a factor but was 44 years ago, most Argentinians weren't even born in 1982 or were small children like me. The enemity with England in football comes from the World Cup in 1966 and the shenanigans in that match included the English coach's prohibition of interchange shirts after the match and calling publicly the Argentine players "animals" (go and review that game). In fact, we are pretty chill with England nowadays with France and Spain as our main perceived European rivals. Of course, this is a semi-final and we are emotional about it similar to the English fans but this trend to the "hate" is stupid like all the trends in this insufferable social media cover of the World Cup; the search for likes and made-up controversies is out of control.
Forget Sir Alf Ramsey's 1966 'animals' insult, the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas war, the 1986 Hand of God/greatest goal in history, Beckham's 1998 stupid boy send-off, or even the Napoleonic Wars; my beef is still the 1964 typhoid outbreak traced to Argentinian tinned corned beef!
The Falkland Islands belong to Argentina since they are on the continental shelf; they are WITHIN Argentina. The English are on the islands now because 200 years ago they invaded, just as they have invaded many places in the world and formed colonies. But they are not natural territories of England; these territories are thousands of miles from England. The issue of self-determination for the islanders does not apply. It's like if someone moves into your house, and you ask them if they want to stay. Your house is yours. Cheers
