Neil, I think your comparison between traditional computers and artificial intelligence overlooks an important distinction. Traditional software consists of human-written programs (rules and instructions) that tell a computer exactly what to do. AI and ML represent a different paradigm. Instead of explicitly programming every rule, we design models that learn patterns from data and develop their own internal representations for solving tasks. The goal for these systems is to generalise beyond the examples it was trained on, rather than simply follow predefined instructions. Humans still play a crucial role by designing the model architecture, training process, and objectives, but the decision-making logic itself emerges from the learning process rather than being hand-coded. LLMs are a great example of this.

The main concern with modern AI is that it's not just another computer program, these models have now become so complex that we often don't fully understand how they arrive at their conclusions.
