hey, hot dog with bacon on it DOES inspire an overwhelming sense of awe!

12:17 I wonder if Piccard and his assistant were the first to experience the Overview Effect — the effect of looking back on Earth and being overcome with the awe and understanding the smallness of our place in thee universe. What a cool story! Also maybe this guy should have attempted the Arctic hot air balloon exploration... might have avoided that whole fiasco. Edit: holy crap this is the bathysphere guy too?? Never mind, he was way too busy being a badass.
@
The reason Piccard's excursion had so many problems is that he forgot to say "Engage!" at the time of departure.

This was such a ride! Sitting in the Zurich countryside and watching this video while the evening sky grows darker ( and the thermometer FINALLY starts going down..) just made it all the more magical...
And Savannah is such a good storyteller! I just wanna hang out with them and ask about science stuff! 😂

This story is so cool! It’s like Apollo 13 but set in 1931! I would love a movie about this.

Okay, so I just finished a Game Changer short and am immediately struck by a Roseate Spoonbill sweater.

Nice of Scishow to do an episode filling out the family backstory for Sar Trek: The Next Generation's Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
@
Bertrand Piccard, Auguste's grandson, was the first person to circumnavigate earth in a balloon in 1999.
@
This was not a failure at all!! This was an amazing test of flight that happened to have science as a backdrop.
@
Obergurgl. Now that's a fun village name.

Funfact: Picards great great great grandson later became the captain of the spaceship USS Enterprise!

I spent the entire video going " why do I know this guys name? I am not familiar with this saga" and right at the end you mention the Bathyscaph, and a light went on with a near audible 'ding'

This should be a film.

"We are prisoners of the air" goes SO HARD
Also these old-timey explorers were absolute ballers, just vibes, grit, luck, and a casual disregard for the risk to their own lives. Imagine sending a mission to the Moon with, like, no Artemis II testing, just rocket fuel and dreams and fingers crossed that they don't crash when they get there.
@
I was not prepared for 'Obergurgl'

Pressurized capsules in the 1930s are wild to think about, since basically every component had to be invented from scratch for conditions nobody had ever survived before.
@
Auguste Piccard’s Grandson Bertrand Piccard would become the first to fully circumnavigate the globe in a balloon in 1999.

7:17 So you're saying... Piccard went where no one had gone before?

(This story is wild, thanks for putting this together!)
