The Piccard saga goes on. Bertrand Piccard, grandson of Auguste, was in the crew of the first Balloon to circumnaviagete the globe.

The reason Piccard's excursion had so many problems is that he forgot to say "Engage!" at the time of departure.

This was such a ride! Sitting in the Zurich countryside and watching this video while the evening sky grows darker ( and the thermometer FINALLY starts going down..) just made it all the more magical...

Also these old-timey explorers were absolute ballers, just vibes, grit, luck, and a casual disregard for the risk to their own lives. Imagine sending a mission to the Moon with, like, no Artemis II testing, just rocket fuel and dreams and fingers crossed that they don't crash when they get there.

Pressurized capsules in the 1930s are wild to think about, since basically every component had to be invented from scratch for conditions nobody had ever survived before.
