The UK Has an Awkward Tax Avoidance Problem

In modern Britain, two businesses can sell the same product on the same street, to the same people, for pretty much the same price, and play by completely different rules when it comes to tax. This is

7:09 The Spiders Web is a really good watch. Highly recommend to anybody into the shady financial underworld. Make sure you have taken your blood pressure meds.

I run a small business. My accountant made an error with transaction categories of about £500. It was an easy fix, but it was submitted incorrectly.

I then, a small business who generated less than £100k revenue for that year, then went through a 4 month long compliance check, owed an additional £100 in tax and then got fines.

For £500 miscategorised payment worth £100 in tax.

Honestly has me wanting to close up shop because the system is clearly designed to milk small businesses while enterprises can walk away with a £1 tax bill.

Honestly, I rarely comment on videos, but I find your videos to be both insightful and useful. Your production quality and the clear in-depth research you've done is really appreciated by this individual

Damien invesigates, loving this new style of video.

All the tax they save yet don’t pass it onto the workers in wages…

I'm a one-man-band with a limited company. There was a year when I paid more corporation tax than Starbucks. I changed accountant after that.
@
If you can buy local British over multi-national corporations we'd all be much better off, that's before even factoring in the tax problem.
@
Often overlooked in these discussions is that Universal Credit paid to low-income workers could be seen as a corporate subsidy — keeping wages artificially low while taxpayers pick up the tab.

Remember guys, Damien is NOT suicidal

I’m closing my online business of 24 years at the end of the year due to this. We’ve employed 13-15 people throughout with barely no staff turnover - we’ve always paid our taxes etc as i like to sleep at night. However, I cant sleep at night now as we have been struggling for years due to this ‘tax inequality’ - Our main competitor is Amazon. You wouldn't believe how little, if any they pay in comparison. I’m baffled as to who will be providing jobs in the future to pay these taxes

Galling how different the punishments are for individuals and large businesses.

Rob a grand from a bank and you'll be put in jail for years.
Rob billions from the public and you'll get a raise.

Imagine if the punishment for robbing a bank was "well, if we catch you we'll make you pay the money back".

Maybe one for Financial Interest, but would love a list of the worst offenders. I can't change the tax dodging but I can change where I shop

You will never fix a tax system when 90% of MP's are benefiting from it.
@
The system isn't broken. Working exactly as designed.
