Hello I am from Bangladesh I love to learn English. I always speak English , Sometimes I have a mumbling problem I am trying to handle
@
the intelligibility reframe honestly changed something for me. I spent years in Amsterdam trying to sound less Polish and then gave up on Dutch around year two because everyone switched to English the second they heard my accent, no wล‚aล›nie. now with Italian I'm making peace with sounding foreign. my partner's mum doesn't need me to sound Roman, she just needs to catch what I mean. the "ask what they didn't understand" bit is where I still freeze though, because in the moment I just want to disappear. italki once a week helps me get comfortable asking, and I've been using praktika between when I want to hear my own pronunciation back without a real human waiting on me, still figuring out what actually sticks... does anyone else find asking "what didn't you get?" harder than the speaking itself?

Hi everyone - Georgie here. I really enjoyed making this series for you all. Speaking anxiety is so common for language learners - I used to feel very nervous speaking Spanish! In this series, we spoke to lots of experts to help understand this problem and come up with tips for how to overcome it. You can find the whole series here, including some really interesting podcast episodes: www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/beaโ€ฆ Let us know what you think! ๐ŸŒŸ

I get confused how should I use might, would, could in normal conversation.
Like you said : You might get confused...
But I can not decide when can I use might and would or could. Can you help ? Can you create a long conversation video for this?

Thank you Georgie for these little gems. I agree that intelligibility it's more important than a native accent. I have to admit though, that I long for a kind of a native accent, or one of them all, ha, ha. Thanks again!

๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜ŠGeorgia is always the best. I loved the language because of her; she pronounces words so professionally.โคโค

Love this message! Being understood matters so much more than sounding "native," and I've taught students from all over the world who are living proof. The clearest speakers I know all still sound like themselves.

The tip at the end is super important to remember: ask people what they didn't understand. Most learners never do this, so they practice everything instead of the two or three sounds that they actually need to master. Once you know what those are, minimal pairs are how you drill them. Minimal pairs are words that differ by exactly one sound, like:

bet" / "bit" / "bat"

Focusing on these makes sure your ear and mouth learn the difference that's actually hurting your intelligibility.

It's targeted, and it's the opposite of erasing your accent. You keep how you sound and lose the misunderstandings. And in my experience, knowing you can make yourself understood is what quiets the anxiety in the first place.
