7:26 that is so wild. I already knew about the algae oceans being the real air producers but that trees eat back a lot of their oxygen I didn't know. The root stuff is incredible. The innate programming of biological structures are /is wild. So wild.
8:44. As part of my biotechnology associates program, I have to perform laboratory work at a local independent plant science laboratory. The scientist I worked for is a renowned researcher in plant-arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi relationships. His lab studies the symbiotic relationships between fungi and plants at the molecular level. Using labeled isotopes and gas spectrometry metabolite analysis, his lab tracks the movement of molecules between the two species. Fungi uptake nutrients like phosphorus and potassium from soil and in return the plant roots share the fungi carbon in the form of specially modified fatty acids and hexose sugars. Certain fatty acid synthases are upregulated in some parts of the fungi in response to lipids provided by the plants. Ife also done some work in the greenhouses of the lab and learned that amf fungi indeed benefit the plants. The soybean plants sprouted more pods and were healthier. My boss thinks it could have applications in sustainable agriculture.
One of my fav Hank Green sayings is “air is made of stuff”. It’s something that is easy to forget but internalizes it suddenly makes a lot of things that feel unintuitive a lot more clear.
I thought it was weird learning how trees can basically eat rocks, but then I realized we regularly sprinkle rocks on french fries and other food to make it taste better

Video: How do trees work?
This video made me realize that a Kurzgestagt video dedicated to Fungi would be very interesting, you should consider it.
Edit: never knew this would pop up, thanks everyone
