What nonsense. We have Wharton, Foden, Trent and Palmer (to name a few) who he didn't take and are all excellent on the ball. Anderson and Mainoo were both on his squad and both are technically very good. Harry Kane plays in a team that dominates possession and is a huge part of that. Guehi is a CB at Man City, a team renowned for passing out from the back. Bellingham doesn't really play in that sort of team, but is clearly technically exceptional. Tuchel is talking utter bollocks.
Yes England values are completely different to other countries. Remember when I first move here and was playing uni football, I would scream at players to keep the ball and stop the diagonal passing. It is counterintuitive; it makes you work harder as the ball will keep coming back to you. Keeping the ball preserves energy
I personally agreed with tuchel on the mentality of England players but he was the one that selected the players and called them mentality monsters😂😂😂😂😂😂
Tuchel should be working to push the players to do better, not leaning in to their bad habits. It was bad management. But the players are not innocent.
I was annoyed with Tuchel after the match, but I'm starting to see his point. England are not technical enough on the ball and they lose possession very quickly against top teams. This is something which must improve if we are to break through. So I can understand why Tuchel was scared to bring on forwards. If he had pushed and then England lost the ball up the pitch, we wouldn't have had enough defenders back to stop them. Against a team like Argentina, who are so dangerous when they win the ball back, that could have been even worse. That said, if we were going to lose anyway, I would have preferred to see us go down fighting -bringing the game to them rather than sitting back and waiting for the inevitable.
It's easy to blame Tuchel but he had a tough choice to make. He could see England were struggling and Argentina were resurgent. With 20 mins to go he went for the Mexico do or die defence option - but Argentina were too strong. He's right about DNA - defensive mindset/lack of self-belief against top teams in tournaments, poor in possession and midfield control, over-reliant on pressing, character/hard work and counter attack. Spain are the opposite and that's why they're in the final.
Yes, we have a DNA issue. We don’t have a controller in midfield who wants to take the ball under pressure facing his own net. That prevents us from slowing the game down. Put a semi-decent controller in that midfield, like Zubimendi or someone of that calibre, and we walk the World Cup.
Then choose and play players known for ball possession. He's picked engines, players who get up and down the pitch. The manager's comments are sackable.
The players at 59 mjnutes, before Tuchel made any substitutions had already dropped back, even Kane was sitting in front of the defence instead of being a leader and urging them to get up and fight.
It's a bit of both. Tuchell did himself no favours by subbing defenders so early. However, England does have a dna problem when it comes to pressure and holding the ball.
