We are witnessing the second phase of the Artificial Intelligence era. The first phase was defined by the gold rush to build infrastructure (chips and data centers). The current phase, ushered in by movements such as Moonshot AI, is the era of margin wars and efficiency.
AI is becoming an affordable commodity. This benefits the global services sector and supports financial markets such as the STOXX 600, but it severely punishes traditional industries that fail to adapt quickly and technology companies that have overestimated the pricing power of their proprietary models. Moonshot’s listing in Hong Kong will consolidate the Asian market as an alternative hub for liquidity and technological innovation, definitively decentralizing the Silicon Valley axis.
Kai-Fu Lee’s claim that the US embargo "has failed" and isn't holding China back is classic corporate posturing.
It is completely contradictory to the basic economic laws of supply and demand. If the US chip export restrictions were truly "unsuccessful" and irrelevant, a massive, billion-dollar black market for NVIDIA hardware wouldn't exist.
China greatly benefited from the return of Dr. Yang, founder and CEO of Moonshot, after completing his PhD in the United States. At the time, major tech companies such as Google, Apple, Meta, or Microsoft underestimated his capabilities and failed to offer him a clear career trajectory.
This guy has particular western point of view when he talks about delivering return. China always aims long term from a greater vision. These capitalists only focus on the short-term returns. That's the foundamental difference.
