The evidence all around us is that superpowers are in competition with each other, and that everyone else is an exploitable resource, a target, a pawn. Superpowers do not form alliances... except in the most disingenuous manner. We can't say 'well THIS superpower is in OUR corner'. That is simply blind to the facts, ignores the hard evidence. A cow may say 'well THIS farmer is in my corner', but ultimately if the farmer decides to ship the cow off to the abattoir, is the relationship between the cow and the farmer one of friendship?
It is strange and frustrating to see so many leaders and people in advisory roles who are so desperate to befriend the farmer for fear of the wolves, that they refuse to believe that the herd can overcome the wolves themselves. Metaphor aside, we need to acknowledge that a superpower is a supremacist on a state level. They see only themselves as worthy. We must, by all means available, disconnect from them. We must be able to stand up to them, and against them if need be. This is the only way we will see a world where we all prosper, rather than just a few prosper, doing so on the backs of the rest of us.

While we’ve always focussed on how much money is spent on defence we should be focused on efficiency of expenditure. The US drives the target spending while also pushing to sell their very expensive kit. Some may be worth more while some are not. There’s an argument to be made for focusing on what capabilities you’re getting for Monet spent

Expendature is a terrible methodology, Unless you are a big investor in the weapons industries. Value for money methodology needs to be done. As, the price of everything has ballooned and get bugger all. Example: The Stinger, handheld anti-air rocket was $20,000 in 1997 it is now $508,000 each!! The weapon is 95% exactly the same.

The US in that year actually reduced their expenditure.
NATO increased its expenditure in 2022, but not significantly more than they had previously; for example, an increase of 12B from 2017 to 2018. The total expenditure was just 13B higher in 2022 from 2021. The war started in February of 2022 and nothing substantial spent throughout the year.
That to me shows almost no reaction to what Russia was doing. There may have been other factors that caused increases in defence expenditure, but no panic emergency spending.
Nothing changed significantly for the US in 2023. They actually reduced budget and expenditure.
NATO increased expenditure to 35B in 2023. In 2024, spending went up by 75B from 2023 expenditure. Expenditure increased again by 77B last year.
It's only in the past three years that expenditure increased significantly. The past two years were largest. Past three years combined, defence expenditure increased by 187B. That's more than 2015 (5B more), 2016 (8B more), 2017 (17B more), 2018 (12B more), 2019 (13B more), 2020 (16B
