Ed Owen is so out of touch it's absurd. Clearly the oil drilling permits are to appease Trump. Those resources are tapped out and won't contribute in any meaningful way economically. And Anushka's point about the signal it sends to the wider world is absolutely the major issue. And all Owen does is trot out trite nonsense.

All US wars were to protect the privilege of the dollar reserve status. Repeat the lies about China's human rights, the country that has over 800 million people in the middle class, which is the whole of the EU and the US combined. When China deal with Islamist the hypocrites call it human rights abuse; when the US and Israel deal with Islamist the hypocrites say they are fighting terrorists in self-defence.

Tin foil hat moment... The UK's nukes are supplied by the US. Maybe the reason our leaders are always so grovellingly subservient to the US is because the Americans can remotely detonate the nukes and we Brits are effectively hostages.

America has no permanent friends or enemies, only interests

China seem like a much better bet to me, they're ahead of the US on everything, the US is bankrupt financially and morally

Ed Owen is completely wrong how dare he say it is incumbent on us to stand with the US after they have done nothing to reign in Trump and his actions have caused huge economic hardship to the UK and supposed allies. US big tech and venture capitalist firms are carving up the UK. Even post Trump we cannot just say let's all be friends again they just cannot be trusted

Not sure the UK and USA share values any more. ICE, checking people's social media, lies about other countries

He’s going to demand that A spritz do everything he wants us to and we should tell him where to go. He started the war well negotiations for A treaty were making good progress. Probably to try and deflect from the Epstein files. We should stay out. He’s going to want us to boycott certain countries like Canada, Spain. And other people he’s having a tantrum about again our answer should be no. Personally, I think we ought to be looking at Canada for oil and gas. And minerals. After all, they’re part of the Commonwealth, they were backing us in the second world war years before America.

Fk USA.

BUY SILVER and GOLD FAST British fellows. Dollar is dead and it will drag our money with it.

North Korea ,America,Russia,China are much of the same.We need to be more closely aligned with Europe.plain and simple our closest neighbours are obviously the ones that we should respect, trust and support.

A useful case study for how the US treats its allies when you dare to stand up to it is New Zealand when it became nuclear free and would not all US ships into NZ ports due to their neither confirm nor deny policy regarding nuclear status (armament or power). NZ was frozen out for well over a decade.

America's proxy war is a threat to humanity.

Like a good squire UK will go down with its American master!

The real question is why do we continue to fundamentally rely on the united states for our security? They are a major cause of global conflict.
@
The US has never been our ally. We're just a giant aircraft carrier in the Atlantic to them. The special relationship never existed

Cant see Burnham being servile like Farridge, Baddenoch and Starmer.

Human rights is worse in the US than China.
@
Burnham and the government should have absolutely nothing to do with Trump or the United States.

😂 The “special relationship", was long over BEFORE Burnham

An hour talking about football and Manchester? Sounds like the perfect way to avoid actually discussing policy. I’ll believe the "standing up to" part when I see something other than a polite phone call and a few press releases. Good luck to Burnham, he's going to need it.

An hour-long chat about football and Manchester right out of the gate! Classic way to break the ice, but can Burnham actually hold his own when the real politics kick in? Who do you reckon wins this power struggle?
