I want kids and I tried for them. Even got IVF and it failed. However, I recognize that it truly is for the best. The world just seems like its getting worse than when I was a kid. I cant give my kid the life that I had because it doesn't exist. The world is burning and also running out of water. My kid will have to deal with that and the rat race of capitalism.
Its a blessing that my child will never have to experience that. Infertility truly was a blessing in disguise. Not for me, but for my children that won't be forced to exist in this.
I keep people talking about lower birthrates, but I never understood why is it an issue.
There was a boom on birthrates with the Industrial Revolution, the drop was bound to happen one day. Add to that the fact that the 1% is boasting that they won't need the lower classes to work for them in the future because they will have AI robots, so why should anyone today have a child if their future is to be unemployed and homeless?
ppl also live a LOT longer than they used to & prolly don't need to be replaced as frequently. how about improving the quality of life for the ppl that already exist?
We already know that the number one way to increase a country’s gdp is to give women access to birth control and education. I would think those same factors are the main contributors lowering birth rates. Why are we trying to blame screens for this? It’s obvious that when given the ability to choose if they have children or not, women choose the later at higher and higher rates. In countries that have thrown billions at young people through tax breaks, free child care, and tons of other benefits, the bump in birth rates is negligible. The truth is that in the past women had no choice but to have children.
In agrarian societies, having more children could contribute to a family's economic prosperity, as children could gradually participate in productive activities such as working in the fields, doing household chores, or caring for younger siblings.
In the post-industrial era, however, having children now often involves significant financial costs and long-term investment.
The air is literally getting toxic and we can't afford rent. As a guy, I'm getting that vasectomy and enjoying nature while it's still not too much of a luxury to do so
And maybe it’s the natural reaction to the huge population explosion that resulted from reducing infant/child mortality? Once upon a time people had to have large families to ensure some offspring stood a reasonable chance to reproduce.
Instead of worrying about birth rates, might it not be better to worry about the planet’s carrying capacity and ensuring that every human being has a decent life?
Because decades of the ruling class enabling "just a little more corruption" has created a terminally dysfunctional society that is failing in just about every measurable metric.

Housing is a huge factor, Cal, but I wonder if it's the primary driver or just a symptom of larger cultural shifts. Young adults might be prioritizing autonomy over traditional milestones regardless of the market.
