As an Argentinean who lives in Argentina I can tell you this: for most people here, Messi already surpassed Maradona. I'm 54 so I saw Diego live, not only on TV, I saw him on the Terraces, on the stadium, many times, even before he went to Barcelona. I saw him also at the WC Qualifiers games in 85, and then on Copa America 87.
Yes, what he did in 1986, especially those 3 consecutive games (Uruguay, England and Belgium) was insane. But Maradona at his finest was too short compared with Messi. Maradona was unstoppable from 1977-1981, then he couldn't shine on Barca, then had 3 more unstoppable years at Napoli, 1986-1988, then his substance abuses didn't do any favors for him.
Messi never stopped being Top Tier, for 20 consecutive years, and for me, surpasses Maradona in any kind of comparison: goals, assist, dribbles, trophies, endurance, everything, and that's how I would say 80% or more see it here. The Maradona Stans that are left are more for political reasons than anything else, which I found stupid. This is Football.

Sorry, clearly you don’t know what argentinians feel for Messi. Messi is definitely one of us. Let me tell you, Messi comes back every Christmas to his home city and is celebrated non stop, and everyone in the neighbourhood adores him. He is one of us, as Maradonna was one of us. Agree, different expressions of one culture. Ask anyone and you will hear the same. Messi is in every Argentinian heart ❤.
I think they even let us score because they have studied us over the last 10 years and what we do when we go one up near the end. Basically we played right in to their trap. we made the subs, sat back and Argentina's plan worked perfectly.
I think Tuchel underestimated Argentina. This is a team who become stronger especially after the 60th minutes!!! First half Argentina forced England to play a very physical & robust games. This is to break down their mental. Second half Argentina changed tactics and shift messi to the right & then the music started 😂😂. They ripped england’s arse opened like a coconut 😂😂
I didn't understand why not put atletic wingers to explore this Messi corner? He just low the lines puting more defenders and gave space to Messi do his thing on that side.
More respect and less prejudice. In all of World Cup history, since 1930, England reached a final just once, and Spain did twice, including the current final. Argentina got there seven times.
Tuchel's tactics aside, it is absolutely mind boggling that England did not anticipate a last minute barrage from Argentina. Did they not watch Argentina's games throughout the World Cup? It was bound to happen.
