Xishuangbanna (Sipsong Panna), in southern Yunnan, has been a major center of Tai (Dai) culture for many centuries.
Some of them moved south along the Mekong River from Xishuangbanna into what are now Laos, northern Thailand, and Myanmar. Over several centuries, some of these groups eventually established the major Tai-speaking kingdoms that later became Thailand and Laos.
The broad timeline is:
Before the 10th century: Ancestors of today's Tai-speaking peoples lived in Xishuangbanna, Guangxi and Guizhou in southern China.
From roughly the 8th to 13th centuries: Various of these Tai-speaking groups migrated south and southwest into mainland Southeast Asia. These migrations occurred over generations, not as a single mass movement.
13th century: Tai rulers established the Sukhothai Kingdom, widely regarded as the first major independent Thai kingdom.
Around the same period, other Tai-speaking kingdoms emerged, including Lan Na in northern Thailand and Lan Xang in what is now Laos.
It's important to note that these kingdoms were not founded by all Tai (Dai) people. Rather, they were founded by specific branches of the Tai-speaking peoples that had migrated south. Other Tai grou
