I watched it live and couldn't believe what I was watching, bryson doing the river dance on that clump of grass ! The R&A have been VERY diplomatic calling it irrevertent, in my eyes he deliberately stomped on that grass , EVERY golfer knows you can't do that , he had acres to step around the area and CHOSE to stand in the ONE place he wasn't allowed , I like bryson but the Patrick Reed in him came out
The Sky commentary team really did hack their way around that and firmly sat on the fence. I think the great Peter Alliss would have described it perfectly and given his opinion on it and not cared a jot who he upset. Why in the modern day are we petrified of our own shadow. Pundits and commentators must talk with absolute confidence and honesty.
The only thing wrong with the ruling, was that they said it was unintentional. It looks pretty intentional.
All golfers know that you have to be pretty careful in those situations. And Pro Golfers know more than anyone, that you can't improve your backswing in that way.
It was obvious he lifted his leg so high to stamp down on that long grass, he tried to make it look like a normal step forward, but made a huge mistake and purposely tried to cheat, and got caught, serves him right
Show the full footage from the moment he reaches his ball. The Golf Channels Paul McGinley called it perfectly. Bryson stood directly behind his ball to gauge his escape route. You need to see the full incident and not just the side on shot when he’s addressing his ball. Correct penalty. End of story
I thought this was harsh when I watched it last night, but the footage that’s come out this morning shows him stomp on the waist high tuft 3 feet behind his ball. He knows what he’s doing there, you can see how it being folded back has improved his backswing.
It's a clear breach to me. DeChambeau could easily have walked around the front side of the ball (between the ball and the camera, where the grass was already flattened) instead of stomping heavily on the high grass which was obviously where his swing area would be. The R&A have said diplomatically that the breach was inadvertent, but hey, he is a tour professional who knows the rules in detail.
