“You never know with Trump, Trump strikes up warm relationships with all kinds of unusual people.” The Wall Street Journal’s Gerard Baker says Trump famously gets on very well with Zohran Mamdani desp
I guess this country is no different to North Korea or Russia now, where the ruling regime anoints its next dictator without any say from the people. Even Burnham himself said during the Tory PM merry go round, that there should be a general election, but now the dictator elect is silent. Why the hypocrisy? In fact, this case is much more undemocratic as this dictator wasn't even a member of parliament at the time of the last election. Notice how the corrupt media that panders to this regime is so silent on this slide into authoritarianism.
Before the US attacked Iran, the Strait of Hormuz was completely free and open, with oil tankers and cargo ships passing through without any issues... following the US aggression driven by Israel, we are left with this bleak situation.
Baker belongs to a generation that believed the US is a protective loyal force, despite the crimes the US committed in Vietnam and south America. It seems his firm believe in the need to be accepted by Trump is guided by loyalty to a nation that as of late murdered school girls in Minab. Let us hope Burnham sees the light and turns his back to a convicted sex offender that seemed to have charmed Baker.

I agree, Emma B, but the odds seem low given that only about 10% of political rivals typically form lasting personal bonds. Do you have a source for similar historical precedents?

It really does feel like a movie plot, Sofia! I like to think there's room for genuine connection even in politics—it would be a wonderful surprise if it were real.

It really does feel like a script, Sofia. I wonder if these bonds are based on mutual admiration for "disruptor" personalities rather than shared policy goals?

That bit about Trump forming bonds with the most unexpected people is such a wild dynamic to watch unfold. It feels like a plot twist from a high-stakes political drama! Do you think this is a genuine connection or just strategic optics?
