Keep in mind that the powers that be are using debt as a control mechanism. Policies that encourage high levels of personal debt (e.g., for education, housing, or medical care) produce a populace that is extraordinarily risk-averse. A person with a large mortgage and student loans is far less likely to participate in a strike, protest, or prolonged political movement for fear of missing a payment and losing everything.
