UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham promises to review the early prisoner release scheme in England and Wales, but with only weeks to go until it starts and the prisons full, is there enough time to make c
The UK population has increased by 10m in 20 years. We clearly need more prisons. And, for watertight convictions of the worst cases, the death penalty.
I think they really need to overhaul risk assessments for offenders in general, as that's the real culprit. We shouldn't even be in this scenario, 1) People who have committed serious offences should be off the list entirely 2) The risk to community SHOULD override any release full stop, at least without strict supervision. And while we're at it 3) change all the "Imprisoned for Public Protection" sentences that were deemed to be illegal to fixed length sentences. These weren't life sentences, but given to a lot of people that were just "problem" people that committed minor crimes and served a lot more time than their original crime would have received if punished today. There are people who have served decades in this group, you wouldn't get that for the worst crimes (below a full life tariff).
I think the focus should be on rehab and after serving time prisoners should be given a chance to rebuild their lives. I disagree with records after prison preventing ex offenders from ever being free and definitely disagree with recall and instances where people have even been detained for many years for petty crime. It should never be the case for ex offenders to be living in the streets. Everyone deserves dignity and privacy. Only sadists and killers should never be released.
Why can’t prisons be built in bleak places like the outer Hebrides? There are a lot of bleak uninhabited islands in Scotland and off shore so why aren’t prisons built there? Why do prisons have to be holiday camps? They are certainly not in America!!
It’s about time we started at looking at rehabilitating the lives of drug addicts rather than punishing them. Then you have more room in prisons and less petty crime on the outside.
How could it ever be up for debate? You make such 'people' serve their full term because of the disgusting nature of the crime. If sentences must be reduced, let it be for crimes like fraud, rather than the most disgusting violent crimes against our Girls/Women.
You don't release murderers early just to make space. Madness. There are lots of people in prison for relatively trivial offences. Kick them out.
