Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator who evolved from Donald Trump's outspoken critic to one of his closest allies in Congress, died at 71 following a brief and sudden illness.

Graham was directly implicated in the plot to force Mike Pence to reject the election of 2024, reportedly, as Mark Meadows' phone was the only possible source of evidence about Trump's communications the night of January 6. Trump's Secret Service protection also deleted their phones despite a Congressional directive not to do so. Mark Meadows' phone became the subject of "executive privilege" which leads to "official immunity" for Trump's criminal liability for his own actions. Graham's position, regardless of the evidence, finds many parallels in today's Congress, and his private life remains a matter for speculation.
