the fact that this man prioritized sharding data over keeping it to himself, and creating a system of expensive requests that would stretch the 1-year data gathering over decades shows what a golden heart and empathic mind he has. normal business would make millions at the expense of any of that shared data. I don't want to start singing kumbayaa, but if more smart and powerfull people were like this, we would live in a utopia tbh...
I not only admire Dr. Demis Hassabis, but I also admire the interviewer's capacity to ask questions in line with the intelligence of Demis Hassabis. I felt like she was reading my mind. Every time Dr. Hassabis was telling something, my next question that came to mind was literally asked from her afterward, creating an explanation that ties together how each problem and breakthrough ties together one after the other following an amazing chain of thought. This is one of the most brilliant and beautiful interviews I have watched ever.
I wish more people had the "Wait we can compute all the proteins in a few months? Why don't we just do that? Let's do it" attitude. Is a problem really "solved" if it's behind a paywall or a hard to navigate advanced system with waiting lines? We "solved" diabetes, but people still die because insulin in the US is a scam, so it's not really solved.
But we did solve protein folding. You can just go and look it up. Demis is a hero, I can't wait to see what he cooks up next.
