Shelagh Fogarty is joined by the iPaper's football correspondent Pete Hall to analyse Thomas Tuchel's decisions in England's World Cup semi-final defeat, before opening the debate to LBC callers.
Tuchel was deified by pundits and fans despite multiple red flags. His harsh, public criticism of the team after the Norway win was rationalized as strategic. His trolling of England's best player- calling him repulsive and delaying his start. His sideline hysterics. Tuchel is regularly described as part genius, part psychopath. Only the players fully know this guy. They should be the final deciders.
My main problem with Southgate was that we could all see where he went wrong, but he would stubbornly deny any of it and then would make the same mistakes again and again.
I want to believe that Tuchel can do better next time, but I need to hear him accept that he made mistakes in this game, tactically and how he would have done things differently if he could go again.
That would make me believe in him a lot more after that performance.
I shall be supporting Spain on Sunday. The tactics adopted by some Argentina players reminded me of the tactics employed by their predecessors in 1966 (in honour of the recently deceased Senōr Rattin). As for those demonstrations for Las Malvinas, forget it, amigos. You ain’t having ‘em! Viva Espagne! How about Pep for England manager?
We did what we always do, scratched out an advantage or draw then fell deep to defend against some of the best goal scorers on the planet. Something is bound to go in, even against the best defence in the world, if you just invite the other team to pepper your goal.
As a well known manager once said: Football is the most important thing of the unimportant things. England lost against a better team that played better football. It was the team that lost and needs to take the blame not just the manager. Of course Tuchel should not be sacked.
You need to beat the top teams on the way to winning the world cup and unfortunately England never do. They get over confident after beating smaller teams then get a dose of reality against any real contenders.
It's easy to blame Tuchel. But the bottom line is England struggled to keep possession and create chances against a top team in a tournament - as they have done many times before. Spain did the opposite against France.
As soon as they scored the first goal i knew where the game was going..i changed channel. England was "Meh" throughout the tournament and was impressed they got so far.
Norway is celebrating reaching the quarterfinals (their best result ever), England is mourning losing in the semifinals (their second best result ever). The curse of high expectations.
When you have eight defenders on all can do is defend. It’s like just wrapping your arms around your head when someone is punching you, at some point a punch is going to land.

Hindsight is always 20-20 with England fans. A semi-final is nothing to be upset about.
Stop expecting them to win against 1st class opponents.
