Your fault if you didn't have full coverage on your bike or car. Full coverage insurance for a motor sickle is inexpensive....includes theft as well. And you're a medical student?!? You have access to money then. Full dresser HD and full coverage insurance with medical, theft, etc....well under 1000 a year!
