Gold's journey doesn't end when it reaches Earth. Carried by rivers over millions of years, it travels across landscapes before settling in hidden deposits. Discover how prospectors follow water's tra
Water in rivers is not why gold has been concentrated. A nugget of gold comes from veins of gold and those veins are how it get concentrated. Indirectly it is actually water that transports gold between cracks in the rock. A "stream" of water with tiny concentrations of minerals travels deep below the surface through the cracks and is concentrated by the fact that gold will precipitate out at specific pressures and temperatures. So in a vertical column of earth there can be tiny fractions of gold for the most part and then at certain depth it will freeze in place in the cracks it is traveling through(veins), which are then eroded by rivers.
Interesting, currently in Western Australia. Been working on a LOS (line of strike) which runs for 400 metres. I use metal detectors and have found over 120 pieces of gold, weighing anywhere from 0.02 grams up to 4.5 grams. Have a total of 80 grams so far. I never have been able to figure out why gold is where it is and how it can end up running in a line for 400 meters without so much as a 15 meter deviation from a straight line…nature is amazing. Gold loves its own company, where there’s one nugget there’s nearly always more gold nearby…

Gold is created in some of the most powerful events in the universe. When two neutron stars collide, they release enormous amounts of energy and produce the perfect conditions for forging heavy elements like gold through a process called rapid neutron capture (the r-process). Some rare types of supernova explosions may also create gold, although scientists now believe neutron star mergers are the primary source. The newly formed gold is blasted into space, where it mixes with clouds of gas and dust. Billions of years later, some of this material became part of the solar system and was incorporated into Earth during its formation.
Mary Ausitin in her collection of short stories set in the California desert called 'Land of Little Rain' includes a story of an old gold prospector called 'The Pocket Hunter'. It details the process miner's used of following concentrations of placer gold upstream in an effort to locate the original source or 'Mother Lode'.
