The most significant breakthrough that made Wi-Fi practical, fast, and reliable is attributed to scientists at CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) in Australia. Led by John O’Sullivan, along with colleagues Terence Percival, Graham Daniels, and Derek Wyndham, the team developed the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) prototype in the early 1990s. Their key innovation was solving the problem of radio signals bouncing off walls (multipath interference) using a technique derived from radio astronomy. They lodged a patent for this technology in 1992.
